Super Power – It’s Context and Theory

1978 was one hell of a year for Scientology from a technical standpoint. L. Ron Hubbard had just returned to his home in La Quinta after about six months off the base, following the FBI raid of the Complex in Los Angeles in July 1977.

When Hubbard returned and settled in he began in earnest a project started the previous year – the shooting of his Technical Training Films. He figured that since we were in an age where visual media were king, that visual demonstrations of TRs, metering and sessions would be valuable for students to have as standards to emulate in their training. But that’s the subject for another time, except for the fact that the trials and tribulations of getting the first several of these films shot led to his development of the rundowns that became known as Super Power.

The only person who knew anything about shooting motion pictures in the entire crew was LRH himself. No one else knew a thing about this very highly technical field. Being the world’s all-time do it yourselfer, LRH never considered this a hindrance even for a moment. He jumped right in and we all jumped in behind him. Somehow things eventually got “in the can,” but it wasn’t smooth. The technical or other reasons why things weren’t smooth occupied his hours off the set.

Inside Scientology Compilations

Occasionally you’ll see people writing about people altering LRH tech and changing things that were LRH and thus perverting the subject. One thing to know right at the outset is that LRH had people assisting him on research and compilations right from the early days, even before publication of Book One (Dianetics). If you look in Technical Volume I, you’ll see mention of a compilations unit and mention of the first Hubbard Dianetic Research Foundation.

Throughout the original the Tech Volumes (original 1976 printing) there were all kinds of HCOBs (Hubbard Communication Office Bulletins) with signatories other than LRH’s. I don’t recall if these have all been removed, but LRH never seemed to have any problem with people contributing to the subject despite what some people may think to the contrary.

With the formation of SO management, people in the Technical and Qualifications Divisions continued to assist in the writing of HCOBs and assisting in research auditing. Commodore’s Staff Aides for Divisions 4 and 5, CS-4 and CS-5, often wrote bulletins, as did other people. From what I know these were always based on an order from LRH to “write a bulletin on so and so [meaning a specific topic—usually related to some technical matter or discovery that had just come up].” The person would write it up and send it through to LRH with a CSW (completed staff work, i.e. submission for authorization) for okay. LRH would look it over and okay it as is or modify it in some way and then authorize it for issue. The two names you’d mostly see on issues from that period are Ron Shaffran (CS-4) and John Eastment.(CS-5). The signatory for the issue would usually say “[Name, Post] for L. Ron Hubbard Founder (or Commodore)” or “By order of L. Ron Hubbard Founder.”

Inevitable Future of Scientology

Independent Scientologist Dan Koon aka Joe Howard – ex Int Base Sea Org Member (1977 – 2004), LRH Technical Reseasch & Compilations Unit Director, talks about the future of Scientology.

Going Clear

The subject of Clear seems to have erupted lately. It has been extensively described, hotly debated, passionately sought and overtly and covertly invalidated since its first mention by LRH more than sixty years ago. The significances attached to Clear are nearly limitless.

The definitions from the Tech Dictionary alone are fascinating. Here they are in part:  CLEAR, n. 1. a thetan who can be at cause knowingly and at will over mental matter, energy, space and time as regards the first dynamic (survival for self). The state of Clear is above the release grades (all of which are requisite to clearing) and is attained by completion of the Clearing Course at an Advanced Organization. (Scn AD) . . .  3. a Clear is not an all-knowing being. A Clear is somebody who has lost the mass, energy, space and time connected with the thing called mind. ( SH Spec 80, 6609C08) . . .  6. the name of a button on an adding machine. When you push it, all the hidden answers in the machine clear and the machine can be used for a propoer computation. So long as the button is not pressed the machine adds all old answers to all new  efforts to compute and wrong answers result. Really, that’s all a Clear is. Clears are beings who have been cleared of wrong answers or useless answers which keep them from living or thinking. (Aud 4 UK) . . .  10. a person who can have or not have at will anything in the universe. (5412CM06) . . . 12. one who has become the basic individual through auditing. (DTOT, p. 33)

In the ensuing 15 years after the release of Book One, LRH did more research and made further discoveries about Clear. In an article called The States of Existence, LRH wrote: “Release, for years, was mistaken for Clear and it was even called Clear. But time has revealed that Clear was far above anything one had dreamed of previously.”

Hello world!

Mountain View Independents

Dan Koon and Mariette Lindstein of Mountain View California

Dan is also known as TRs student Joe Howard in the only remaining tech film (unless Miscavige has burned all copies recently) directed by LRH. During the making of that film, LRH’s conversation with Dan and his twin, wherein the former clearly demonstrated how an appropriate acknowledgment should land, was taped and played during at least one Int event. During his 27 year SO career, Dan served for fourteen years in LRH Tech Compilations, five years in International Marketing, and held the Senior C/S International post in 1997. Dan had auditing tapes approved by LRH when he was a Qual Auditor during LRH’s last extended period of contact with the Sea Org during the late seventies. He was also commended by LRH for cracking a staff member’s case in a cramming session.

Mariette Lindstein served eight years in executive positions in international management and another five years in RTC. When Mariette was swept out of AVC (while it was in RTC) in the late nineties as part of a massive hey-you transfer by Miscavige, eval tech pretty much went with her.

I don’t think Dan’s TRs have gone out since LRH put them in in 1978. He was one of the few people directly on DM’s lines who never got struck physically. I think it was because Dan temporarily as-is’d Miscavige’s bank when it was within range.
Mariette and Dan are some of the most pleasurable people to be in the same space with. They have a world of tech and admin knowledge and experience between them. They still use it to make them successful in their lives today; Mariette as a photographer and caregiver, Dan as a painter and writer. I highly recommend that anyone in the Bay Area, or anyone traveling through the area, try to spend some time with them. It will be time well spent.
